During the month of February activity returns to the Segura Viudas Estate. The vines will still be resting for a few weeks, though we must start to prepare the soil for when they want to wake up. FEBRUARY One of the first jobs to be done is winter ploughing: a classic during these weeks which attempts to lighten the soil hardened by the cold in order to facilitate penetration of rainwater that has been so scarce lately. Also this year in the plots at the front of the Masia we have begun sowing barley and vetch to ease to control the vigour of the Macabeo vines that are planted there. Competition from these plants will help the vines to be balanced when they reach harvest time thus, avoiding production adjustments further on. Meanwhile, at “La Figuera”, the xarel.lo vines continue to be true to their age. – We are in the “La Figuera” vineyard at the Segura Viudas Estate, a vineyard destined for still wines, more precisely for the Creu de Lavit and at the moment we are pruning. – – I’m Sebastià Raventós, in charge of viticulture here at the Segura Viudas Estate. – Pruning is the main cultural cultivation job to be done in winter. However, Creu de Lavit requires special care. The decades accumulated in the roots makes pruning look far easier than it really is. – We are talking about old plots. Therefore, this plant is already balanced, so it won’t have the vigour of young plants, and a spur pruned balanced vine will provide us with the bunches that we want. – Sebastià thoroughly analyses the vigour of each plant and his experienced cut decides the effort that each vine must go through in order for the balance that its fruits bare is maintained one more year. – When pruning it is important to be aware of the behaviour of all the different varieties of vines, we know that with Xarel.lo, the blind buds are unproductive; therefore we are going to leave two buds on every spur. These buds will bear the fruits, the bunches. – – Pruning of the plant so that it is balanced, we’ve seen it had an average vigour. We have left 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 spurs I think this will give us a production of approximately 3 kilos hectare maximum. – The wisdom behind these people makes it possible if there aren’t any last minute surprises to forecast way in advance how the harvest will go go and at the same time act with utmost prevention and care. The plants and also the fauna realise that the days are getting longer. The endless visits of thousands of birds to the winter bird feeders we have installed, lead us to think that mating will start soon, and we will be able to enjoy the natural concert that each year fills every corner of our landscape with mating songs.
