[Muziek] [Muziek] I’m Carlos Faes and Im married to Anneke, together we have 4 sons and together we have The Philips Fruittuin The Philips Fruittuin is a fruit orchard which originally was only a fruit orchard, and we have made it into a multifunctional farm business with 4 different business models; 1. the fruit 2. the farm shop with local produce 3. the pancake restaurant and 4. a meeting center, where many businesses carry out their brainstorm sessions. I originally came to the farm of the Philips Family to give this business a different direction than only the fruit orchard Because the 24 ha fruit orchard was making a loss. So we needed to think of a new business model to get it going again. So Anneke and I wrote a new business plan. Instead of expanding the fruit orchard we actually wanted to half its size and we wanted to sell all the fruit that grows here exclusively to people from our local city and region. At that point our businessplan was called; The gap between the producer and consumer must return to being smaller. In 1994 we were allowed to present the plan that we had made to the family Philips and they were so enthusiastic that they asked us if we wanted to do it as our own business. 3 months later we were the owners of the fruit business. At that point I wasn’t yet 26 years old. Yes the business model, to create that was really the most difficult part. And to get the authorities to give permission for the changes Here, if there was only a pancake restaurant, or only a shop, or only a fruit orchard that wouldnt be possible. It wouldn’t be attractive enough and nobody would come here. To convince the authorities that this was the right plan for the future of this business, to make it future proof, no one was convinced of this. In order to convince the Rabobank of this we needed a good plan and planning permission. Only when we gained the planning permission was the financing made available. But that was also not without risks In the first few years we really struggeled to meet our financial obligations. But at the moment that the synergies which we wanted to develop, began to work. Then the flywheel really began to turn and then you see at once that it really can. Then because your clients and revenue begins to grow, you simpily see that its going to succeed. If you use your gut feeling as an entrepreneur and think that’s where I want to go to with my business and I’m going to invest in that and go for it. Then I am convinced that, if it is a good side activity that is developed, that can function on its own, and can run on its own. with the agricultural business as the core, then I am convinced that it is possible. Because you add so much value to such a business whereby there is a snowball effect.
