Sweet Farm

November 5, 2019

Magnolia calf came to us back late one
night in October. A ranch hand had noticed that her mother wasn’t allowing her to
nurse. She had to start foraging and grazing, so she was eating grass, really,
when she should have been still getting milk from her mother.
So the ranch hand, he knew that this was a safe haven for animals, so he brought
her here to us. I came in the next day to work and noticed one of her hooves
looked a little off. Half of the claw was missing, so it looked like maybe she
had been stepped on. She was very young, and she had this really serious injury,
and she was trying—really, fighting—to keep herself alive. But she’s
proven us all wrong that she’s such a survivor and a fighter, and she’s
really thriving. She’s looking really good, getting a nice belly on her. She’s a
beautiful, beautiful calf, and we call her our Little Buffalo. When she gets a little
bigger, a little stronger, she’ll be able to hang out with her big brothers. We have
two steers on the farm, and she’ll be able to live out her life treated as an
individual who has likes and dislikes and who can run around and kick up
her heels and just experience joy. So to see her be able to run around and graze
and just lie side by side, you know, with her brothers and be at peace… that’s
gonna be… that’ll be her life. And what’s great she’ll be an ambassador for the
other calves that were destined to become beef or veal, and we’re hoping since she
came to us so young and she really, she loves human affection that she’ll be
such a great ambassador that people can have these interactions with her, and
hopefully she’ll win hearts and minds and help save lives.
