SLO County considers changes to cannabis cultivation rules

November 3, 2019

Canada’s growing sites are popping up around San Luis Obispo County but there’s heated discussion about what growers can and can’t do KSP wise Megan Healy sat in on the County Planning Commission meeting this morning and brings us an update to the land use ordinance cannabis farms are a hot topic in SLO right now and there are still tons of areas that need to be smoothed out industry workers want to be held to the same standards as any other agricultural farmer treat the cannabis cultivators as fairly as they treat berry growers or anybody else that’s growing under hoop structures but some neighbors of existing cannabis sites are concerned for their safety number one is the smell number two is the water number three is the traffic number four is the crime and are asking for stricter requirements we’re just feeling like we’re getting out stead of our Valley the SLO County Planning Commission held a public hearing Thursday to fine-tune the ordinance discussing things like hoop structures lighting and odor nuisance working through all these issues is striking that balance of what’s going to allow the cannabis industry to thrive as well as be compatible with the existing community one cultivator hopes the county takes all growing techniques into consideration we like to see them to allow us to build hoop houses the same way that berry crops are covered we like them to see us to allow us to do light deprivation pull blackout tarps to induce flowering when it comes to cannabis Cannella says change is a constant things are continuously changing not only at the state level but as we’re seeing today here at the local level and so it’s hard to tell what direction we’re going and and to make a business plan and model and stick to it and the Planning Commission will hold another hearing November 16th to review more proposed changes to the ordinance before it goes to the County Board of Supervisors
