New 50 unit rotary milking parlour changed life on Costello Dairy Farm!

October 2, 2019

Life was slipping by because I was stuck to the farming the whole time and I couldn’t go any place really. I was literally on my own. I was with the kids, taking them everywhere, doing everything with them on my own because Maurice didn’t have the time. I was spending 7 hours a day milking cows. 3 and 1/2 in the morning and 3 and 1/2 in the evening… It came to a stage where we knew we had to make a decision. You see, when you’re down to a one-man operation and you’re milking over 200 cows and you want to be done within an hour or an hour and 1/2, I’d find it hard for any other kind of a parlour, you could but with a rotary you have no walking and the cows come to you the whole time and the option is there if you want to put on more cows. I always knew Maurice was very progressive
in his thoughts in relation to farming. He’s passionate about farming. I never hesitated or said to him not to do what he wanted to do because I knew he was capable of taking on this project and seeing it successful. On the day that the parlour started there was fierce excitement just to see the cows being brought in here. The Dairymaster staff were here.
There was all my family. There was other people who came wanting to see it.
It was very exciting just to see the cows coming in and going on the platform and going around in a circle. It was amazing the way the cows started to adapt to it. After 4 or 5 days they were coming in themselves and now they’re just flying. I guess deciding going with the 50 unit rotary parlour was a massive decision, a massive financial investment but myself and Maurice felt, for us as a couple, it was a major thing so that we’d have more time together as a family. It means that you can cut down to a one-man system. The Cluster Cleanse means you won’t be carrying bacteria from one cow to the next. When you have automatic teat sprayers, you have the drafting… It takes the hard work out of it. That’s why one man can operate this. This has made a big change to my life and it’s working well for me. The biggest change has occurred in Maurice himself, he’s not as busy. And he has more time to just sit down and have a conversation or have more time with the kids so I think it has de-stressed him a bit and it has definitely given him more time to do normal things. Dairymaster, in fairness, were very good. From the start to the finish there was someone available the whole time. No matter what time you would ring them, they were most helpful I thought and they did excellent work. Our experience with Dairymaster, from the very word go we found them very professional, very efficient and how could you surpass that. Our decision was made easy.

We have the same system but for 70 cows. We are done with our 700 cows under 3 hours… Dairymaster is the best system ever!
